NewsBUSINESS & DECISION AMONG THE EARLY ADOPTERS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION'S CODE OF CONDUCT FOR ECO-EFFICIENT DATA CENTRES - General News16/06/2009 Paris, 16 th June 2009
The EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres was launched on 30 October 2008 to tackle a rising concern: whilst Europe has committed itself to a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020, the Information and Communication Technology sector continues to contribute to the problem, with electric energy needs that could double by 2020 in the absence of appropriate measures. The objective of this code of conduct is to provide a reference framework that will substantially help diminish Data Centres' energy consumption, without slowing down the growth of activity required by evolving business needs.
This code of conduct places energy efficiency at the very heart of Data Centres' daily operation: it standardises measurements and encourages continuous improvement through the adoption of best practices, as soon as they are devised or become applicable, such as whenever equipment is upgraded. It thus paves the way to greener IT services, decreasing related operating costs and assisting companies to overcome their high energy consumption challenges, which have become critical to meeting business needs (just-in-time processing, high availability, Internet, etc.).
Business & Decision has fully embraced and adhered to this code of conduct. As a participant, Business & Decision Eolas has agreed to apply the code of conduct whenever it is applicable for all of its existing and prospective Data Centres. As an endorser, Business & Decision Group will encourage all customers owning data centers, to abide by this code of conduct.
"Within the context of our Critical-Adaptive-Eco Hosting offering, and in partnership with thought and industry leaders such as Schneider and Intel, we are committed to a new generation of Data Centres: eco-efficiency is one of the foundation pillars" says Gerald Dulac, Eolas founder. "We are convinced that this code of conduct will rapidly become the new standard, similar to ITIL in other fields. We are very proud to be amongst the first to adopt this program and to have been recognised as such by the European Commission."
